Ring size is dependent on a number of different factors such as age, race, ethnicity, genetics and of course weight. To buy a women a ring as a surprise means that there may be the need to guestimate her ring size. In fact it can be detrimental to purchase the wrong ring size.
A size that is too large may signify that she is a large woman whereas a ring that is too small may insult her weight. It is, therefore, important to get it right without insulting her in any way. So what is the average ring size for women and how do people go about getting it just right the first time?
Most jewelers will tell you that the most popular ring size is a size 6. But this is suitable for the average size women, standing 5’6″ (around 1.7m) in height and weighing around 140 lbs (63 kgs) in weight.
But these averages can be deceiving. A taller woman who is slender may have a smaller ring size. A shorter women who is voluptuous may have a larger ring size. So the average ring size may not always be a good guide. And ethnicity and race may also play a role. For example, in Europe the average ring size is considered to be 7 whereas in South East Asia 5 is the norm.
So what is the average ring size for women? In general, it should be somewhere between 5 and 8. Using this rule, the ring should be within one or two sizes of the correct fit. This is a small margin of error and rings can easily be resized within that range.
Apart from actually measuring her finger, it is advisable to take a ring that she is already wearing and have it sized. Most women don’t even know their own ring size.
The average ring size for men varies between 8 and 14. Most men wear a size 9 ring. But once again, this is based on the average height and weight of a man and does not take into consideration other factors such as race and ethnic background.
Always keep in mind though that whether buying a ring for a women or a man, it is always easier to downsize rather than enlarge a ring. In fact, if a ring is too small, it is often best to return it and get a larger size or opt for another type of ring.
If a ring does need to be resized, it is generally best to return to the jeweler where it was purchased. If the ring was bought online, at a secondhand outlet or handed down, it is advisable to find a jeweler that provides ring alteration services.
Sticking to the averages is the best way to ensure that the ring size is right the first time around. However, talk to the jeweler where the purchase is being made and ask them for the best advice on the ring size that is ideal for the man or women you are buying for.
